Dacier, Anne Lefebvre

Dacier, Anne Lefebvre
(1647-1720)
   scholar
Born in Preuilly-sur-Claise, Anne Lefebvre Dacier, or Mme Dacier as she is known, like her husband, André dacier, was a scholar who translated the ancient Greek and Latin authors. She took part in the second debate between the Ancients and the Moderns and, as a translator of Homer's Iliad (1699) and Odyssey (1708), opposed the liberal adaptations of those works. She took a strong position in support of the Ancients in her treatise Causes de la corruption de goût (1714).
